Facts & Trivia

Rustom (2016) is a crime thriller inspired by India’s real-life 1959 K.M. Nanavati murder case, the last jury trial in India, famously associated with the headline: \”Three shots that shook the nation\”. Here are some lesser-known facts about the film:

  1. Real-Life Inspiration (K.M. Nanavati Case): The film fictionalizes the story of Naval Commander Kawas Manekshaw Nanavati, who shot his wife Sylvia\’s lover, Prem Ahuja, in 1959.
  2. Jury Trial: Nanavati’s case was the last jury trial in India before the system was abolished.
  3. Tagline: The movie’s tagline, \”Three shots that shook the nation\”, was an actual newspaper headline from the case.
  4. Key Difference: In reality, Nanavati reportedly attempted to shoot himself after his wife’s confession but was stopped by her—unlike the film depiction where he does not interact with her after the shooting.
  5. Director Collaboration: This marked Akshay Kumar\’s third successful collaboration with director Neeraj Pandey, following Special 26 and Baby.
  6. Viral Success: The trailer set records with 3 million online views and over 100 million TV views on Zee Network within a single day.
  7. Name Homage: Akshay Kumar’s character, Rustom Pavri, references Dr. Rustom Pavri from Munna Bhai MBBS.
  8. Fictional Elements: The INS Vikrant subplot and several other details were added for cinematic drama and are not part of the real-life case.
  9. Budget & Box Office: Made on a ₹50 Crore budget, the film crossed ₹100 Crore in under 10 days and was declared a SUPER-HIT.
  10. Other Film Adaptations: The Nanavati case has inspired several other films, including Yeh Rastey Hain Pyar Ke (1963), Achanak (1973), Asthram (1983), and Love Affair (2016, shelved).
